I went on a stairway walk with my new friend, Sue today, in San Francisco. She drove us in, and Dan met us later. We did the Lands End walk. Though I've done it before, part of it was closed 2 years ago, so I was able to do that part, and it was the best part of it, it actually had the stairway! It was a lovely day. It was nice getting to know her better, and great to do this walk with her because she grew up here, and told me all these stories of going to the Sutro Baths, the Funhouse, and the ice rink that used to be a part of this area. It was so good to do a stairway walk again, I'm missing them!
We had lunch at the Cliff House. It was excellent! I hadn't eaten there before, so nice to have a nice lunch. Dan drove down and met us, then Sue and I parted, and Dan and I hung out. I went to the Cut Loose outlet store again, but their "new" stuff they have isn't very good.
We then went to the Officers Quarters of the Presidio, to see a part of the "Shanghai Exhibit". There are exhibits in various locations in the Bay area but most seem to be in the Asian Museum here. The one we saw was the "Jews of Shanghai". This was fascinating, we had no idea there were so many Jews in China, nor that they were welcomed there. According to the exhibit there is not really little anti-semitism in China, so many Jews have gone there during periods of fleeing other countries. There was a Sephardic growth during the Opium Wars, and an Ashkenazi group around the 1900's. Of course, many went there to flee the Nazis. The links are included to read more about it, it was like "who knew"? Very interesting.
But oh, wait a minute--here's the best part. As we wandered around the rooms, I overheard a woman say, "Oh , a Mah Jong set"! So I went there immediately and saw an old set, that was used by Jewish women, according to the sign, which says "Chinese Mah Jongg set used by Jewish Women in Shanghai". Hey, maybe this is why it became a Jewish women's game. I started talking to the other woman, who was so excited to hear I've found some games in Marin County, that she took my email address. It's like finding a long lost friend! The joys of Mah Jongg!
We drove around afterwards, walked around Ghiradelli Square, then had the Happy Hour at PF Chang's in Larkspur.
A really good day!
